Like most photographers, I consider myself passionate if not a little obsessive about the art. For the past 15+ years, I've spent most of my free time, money, and energy feeding the addiction while doing what I thought was the "responsible" thing of following a career path with a steady paycheck. I could never bring myself far from photography though.
In college I would hold 2 jobs as a photographer while studying engineering. Upon graduation, I took an engineering job at NASA that would allow me to stay close to photography by developing and analyzing imaging systems. Even then that was not enough and so I quit my job to spend 3 years traveling, living out of my car, and taking photos. This was all done without the thought of pursuing photography as a career. Like many people, I always thought you couldn't realistically make a living doing photography. Eventually I went back to work as a management consultant. During this time, a website I made for fun to showcase my travel photos (Lumika.org) began picking up traffic and to my surprise, I started making money from image sales and assignments. After a few years and a lot of deliberation, I decided to leave my career again and pursue my dreams in photography.
Today I work full time as a travel and corporate photographer. However the photos I sell on this site were not made with the objective of making a sale, but to do something I enjoy and hopefully show a side of cultures and countries that many people don't get to see. I hope they achieve that purpose when you view them.

To Dan Heller for selflessly sharing his knowledge and experience, a rarity in the world of photography
To David Ekholm and Armond Avanes for developing some fantastic software and graciously giving it away for free.
To my friends and family who were always there for me those times when I went broke in the tech bust, when I was robbed and stuck in Mexico, and all the other times which I then loathed but now cherish. |
