I've always had a soft spot for misunderstood countries. That probably explains why Iceland is one of my favorite places to visit. As many of us were taught in school, early settlers were rumored to have given Iceland its name to try and prevent an influx of other settlers from overrunning the island and spoiling their little secret. Nobody seems to be sure if this is true or not but it seems to have been effective if this was the case. Even today people continue to think of Iceland as being a cold, grey, and frozen island. This of course is far from the truth. Iceland does have ice, lots of it. But it also has volcanoes, lava fields, hot springs, and geothermal areas that look like deserts. Nowhere else can you see the dynamic elements shaping the earth packed so tightly together. Wandering the island feels like being on a movie set for some dinosaur movie... a dinosaur movie with great bars and legendary nightlife squeezed somewhere in the plot. |
