Southwest Iceland - A view of Route 1 or the Ring Road (Icelandic: Þjóðvegur 1, Hringvegur) leading to Reykjavik. The Ring Road is the main road in Iceland that runs around the island and connects the different parts of the country together. The total length of the road is 1339 km.
For almost all its length, the road is two lanes wide with one lane in each direction except when it passes through larger towns and cities where it may be expanded to more lanes as well as in the Hvalfjörður Tunnel. Although paved, some portions of the road are still the original 1940's country roads, and contain extreme hazards, such as blind bends and blind hills (this is especially true of the section between Borgarnes and Blönduós) and narrow passes. Now carrying many times the traffic of the original roads, they are unsafe and should be driven with great care.
