Trinidad, Cuba - Plaza Mayor is at the heart of Trinidad's historic center. In the background, the parochial church (Iglesia Parroquial de la Santisima) can be seen.
Trinidad is located in the province of Sancti Spíritus and together with the nearby Valle de los Ingenios, it has been one of UNESCOs World Heritage sites since 1988. It was founded in 1514 by Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar under the name Villa De la Santísima Trinidad.
Trinidad is one of the best preserved cities in the Caribbean from the time when the sugar trade was the main industry in the region. Nowadays, its main industry is tobacco processing and tourism. The colorful buildings, cobblestone streets, excellent live music, and nearby beaches make it a popular tourist destination.
